Teachers: Caitlin O'Byrne and Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye In this class we will discuss how to pick a theme, time period, and/or region for your feast, what works as documentation, how to arrange your courses depending on the type of event the feast takes place, things to look for when choosing a feast hall/kitchen and how to create a budget. 11:00 AM: Shopping, Portion Sizes and Cooking Times Teachers: Anne FitzRichards and Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye In this class we will give you tips on how to shop wisely for your ingredients; how to determine how much of each dish you need to prepare and how to schedule your menu so the cooking times don't conflict. 2:00 PM: How to have a Safe and Organized Feast Kitchen Teachers: Caitlin O'Byrne, Aelf of King's Crossing and Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye In this class we will discuss food safety, how to properly clean your dishes, what feast gear is the best to have and how to organize your kitchen and serving crew. 3:00 PM: Feast Preparation: Part 1 Teacher: Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye In this session we will begin cooking the feast. During this process you will get a hands-on lesson in how to prepare a feast. Please wear clothing that you can cook in and if you have long hair, you must tie it back or cover it up. 4:00 PM: Feast Preparation: Part 4 Teacher: Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye In this session we will finish cooking the feast. You will learn how to portion and plate your dishes, how to "fancy up" the dishes for the high table and how to keep your food warm between courses. Please wear clothing that you can cook in and if you have long hair, you must tie it back or cover it up. Track 2: 10:00 AM: Simple Penannular Broaches Teacher: Tatiana Toddhunter We will take heavy copper wire and make an open circle. With a finer wire we will make the pin part. After the pin part is placed in the circle, we will forge the ends of the circle (pounding with a hammer) to make it larger so the pin part doesn't fall off. 11:00 AM: Dancing for Recess Teacher: Na'arah bat Avraham Learn some of the dances we do in the West, especially the Darkwood favorites. Just the class to begin to prepare for the Baroness' Masked Ball later this fall. Dance is fun. Come and try. No tests, no grades - just fun, just like recess. 2:00 PM: Wool Applique and Gilded Leather Couching Teacher: Aelia Apollonia This simple, strikingly lovely embroidery technique appears in collections of surviving medieval embroideries from mid- to late- period Scandinavia, Germany, and even Spain. In this class, we'll learn the basic technique of appliquéing wool pieces and couching gilded leather strips over them. BRING: 7" hoop, cloth and embroidery scissors (some of each will be provided) FEE: $2 for kit and handout, $1 extra if you wish to take home a hoop 3:00 PM: Mask Making Teacher: Anton Barsuk TBA 4:00 PM: How to be heard in Court: Projection and other Voice Tricks Teacher: Wilhelm von Zweikopfiegen Falke Learn how to be heard when you are presenting in Court, making announcements, doing field or court heraldry or leading your troops into battle. Track 3: 10:00 AM: Introduction to Fighting Teacher: Michael of Hawks Haven Have you ever wanted to become a heavy fighter, but didn't know where to begin? Learn about the very basics of SCA Heavy Combat, including: how to find and make armor, how to become an authorized fighter, and what to expect from your career as a heavy fighter! 11:00 AM: Beginning Calligraphy Teacher: Draig am Coedwig Beginning in 776, King Charlemagne instituted a series of reforms and initiatives that resulted in an extraordinary flowering of learning, scholarship, and the arts that we call today the Carolingian renaissance. Among the critical developments of this time was the style of writing known as Carolingian minuscule, designed from the first to be easy to read, easy to learn, and easy to use, especially in comparison with the deliberate obfuscation of other writing styles then in vogue. Now you, too, can partake of this age of enlightenment by learning to write in the Carolingian style. Please bring: 1.5 mm and 1.0 mm nibs, nib holder (pen), and waterproof lightfast black ink (Higgins Black Magic recommended) OR $8 for writing kit containing the above. Loaner equipment available for the truly destitute. Handouts provided. Class limit 14. 2:00 PM: Introduction to Brewing Teacher: Baccus Kaloethes (Guild of Our Lady and St. Titus the Bastard - The Worshipful Company of Brewers and Brewsters of the West Kingdom) The Class covers: Glossary of Terms, Short History of Brewing, Show and tell of Brewing Apparatus, and maybe a small tasting. 3:00 PM: How to run a lists for a Tournament Teachers: Caitlin O'Byrne and Cynthia de Greenfield Get some real hands-on experience from past Principality Listmistresses. By the end of this class you will know everything you need to know to run a double-elimination tournament smoothly and seamlessly. Other styles will be covered if there is sufficient time. 4:00 PM: How to Create an SCA Name Teachers: Ghislaine d'Auxerre This class is directed at helping those who are interested in creating an appropriate name for their persona be it by time period, country, history, gender, etc. Discussions will involve dispelling myths, explaining the purpose and necessity of consulting heralds and the College of Arms, and even some simple guides to pronunciation. Track 4: 10:00 AM: History of Divination in Western Europe Teacher: Ghislaine d'Auxerre This class will be an overview of different forms of divination found in Western Europe from the Roman Empire to the end of Elizabeth I's reign. Culture, science, and philosophy are only a few of the details that will be explored. NOTE: Though period models of divination will be shown and discussed, actual "divination" will not take place. 11:00 AM: Garb as Armor Teacher: Cerridwen Coedwig Clothiers who have been approached to make garb for fighters, and rapier fighters who wish to add panache to their appearance on the field have in common the need to create clothing that is attractive comfortable, and passes the punch test. We will be discussing sturdiness vs. weight, fabrics and styles, and cutting for mobility. Emphasis will be placed on the puncture and abrasion resistant bits, though full requirements will be reviewed. Fabric samples and finished garb will be available for examination, as will reference books. Surcotes, mandellions, torses and mantles, favors and badges will be glanced at as well. Please bring fabric swatches to punch test. 2:00 PM: Customs and Courtesies in the SCA, or Navigating your way through what to do, and what not to do. A round table discussion about "what's expected". Teacher: Duchess Emma FitzWilliam Newcomers are encouraged to bring in questions; experienced members are encouraged to share one (yes, only one!) "Yeah, really, I did *that*" moment. (e.g., "Yes, I was sitting gate, and asked the King if he was a member.") Handout materials include: 10 things to do at your first event, the "Ten Tenets of SCA Manners," and excerpts from Kingdom Law. Practica: How to bow/reverence, and "how do I address < >." (Hint: the answer is the same for 4 of the 7 top scenarios.) Also, the difference between titles and forms of address. 3:00 PM: Beginning Tablet Weaving Teacher: Thryi de Peel Introduction to weaving with cards - weave a bookmark-length piece and learn something of the tools, tricks and unique aspects of tablet weaving. 4:00 PM: Fingerloop Braiding Teacher: Thyri de Peel Learn two patterns and three variations for fingerloop braiding.
